Dust Collector FAQs: What is particulate matter?

Particulate matter consists of tiny particles in the air that are produced by natural processes and human activities and can be inhaled.

Particulate matter from wood-burning appliances, such as fireplaces and tiled stoves, is of particular concern. The burning of wood produces particles and gases that form particulate matter. Depending on their size, these particles can penetrate the respiratory tract to different depths: Larger particles (PM10) settle in the upper airways, while smaller particles (PM2.5) can reach the alveoli. Particulate matter from wood fires can contain toxic components and cause health problems such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
