In 2025, electrostatic precipitators can still be installed!

Here you will find instructions (CEA_Ausnahmeantrag_20250120) and a sample form (Antrag_Ausnahme22_Vordruck_V1.2), on how you can submit an application to continue operating your old fireplace or tiled stove.

Ash to ash – dust to dust

Our latest status report ‘Ash to ash – dust to dust’ looks at the effectiveness of electrostatic dust extractors in woodburning and tiled stoves. We believe in the results – but read for yourself (CEA_Studie_20241125).

    Our mission challenge motivation

The Clean Exhaust Association (CEA) is shaping the future of wood combustion. With its innovations, it is making heat from wood a clean and sustainable technology – especially in times of increasing demands for clean air.

There are many arguments in favour of heat from wood. Wood-burning stoves, tiled stoves and biomass central heating systems are CO2-friendly heat sources that close the cycle of regional ecosystems. Not only are they close to nature, they also offer a degree of independence from the weather, global politics and energy prices. The electrostatic precipitator ensures that biomass can reach its full potential.

We represent the interests of manufacturers of dust collectors and other air purification technologies. Our aim is to provide policy makers, industry and society with a constructive solution to the current challenges of wood heating.

    The dust collector

One of the most effective ways to reduce dust from wood-burning stoves and heaters is to use a dust collector. It works on the principle of electrostatic charging – like a balloon rubbing against a sweater. A lance uses electricity to charge the dust particles in the flue gas, causing them to settle in the flue gas duct. In short, the separator turns fine dust into coarse dust that can be disposed of. This means that it cannot be inhaled and cannot cause health problems for humans or animals. Dust collectors are already widely used in pellet heating systems and are becoming increasingly popular in the woodburning and tiled stove sectors. If these technologies were widely used, we could save over 70 per cent of the most dangerous particulate matter in Germany alone.

    Particulate matter

Particulate matter is produced when wood is burned and is physically part of the process. This does not mean you have to put up with it. There are many ways to reduce particulate matter from burning wood. One of the most scientifically proven is the dust collector.

Particles between 10 and 2.5 μm (PM 10 and PM2.5) are statistically relevant – for health, it is the particles below 2.5 μm that are most important. These are small enough to enter the smallest lung alveoli or even cross the blood-brain barrier. In addition to cancer, they can also cause lung and cardiovascular diseases.

The Federal Environment Agency regularly calculates the contribution of wood combustion to total particulate matter in Germany. In 2020, households (and therefore wood-burning heating systems and stoves) will be the largest source of particulate matter in Germany. Of course, the problem is not only there, but worldwide. Recommendations from the World Health Organisation regularly suggest that particulate matter emissions, i.e. what reaches people, need to be reduced.

Currently, particulate matter is measured gravimetrically. This means that the dust from a measurement is weighed according to a defined procedure. This makes it possible to determine the mass of particulate matter that has been reduced. Of course, it does not tell us anything about the particularly dangerous very small particles. We therefore advocate counting the number of particles as a measure of the effectiveness of reduction measures. Counting is a measurement standard that is now accepted by experts.

    Our positions

Wir wollen, dass die Wärme aus Holz keine Nachteile mehr hat. Daher stehen wir für folgende Positionen:

We call for the widespread use of separator technology in all combustion processes involving wood as biomass.

We want clean air technologies to move from being optional to being essential. Clean air must not be a question of prosperity.

We support ambitious but realistic limits for wood-burning stoves and heating systems.

We hope that everyone in Germany will benefit from the economies of scale of the innovative separator technology and that the equipment will be affordable for everyone.

We regularly publish comments on legislation and regulation (all texts in German):

    • Stellungnahme zum Entwurf des GEG und des Heizungsgesetzes 09/23
    • Stellungnahme zum BEG und nötigen Förderinstrumenten 10/23
    • Forderung realistischer Ziele für den Blauen Engel für Abscheider 11/23

    Our tasks

The CEA promotes innovation and dialogue on clean air technologies, including across industry boundaries. Our events provide participants with information on technology, standardisation and the heating market as a whole. We also give our products a political voice and hold discussions with politicians and other associations.

    Our profile

The CEA was founded in 2023 as an association of the leading European dust collector manufacturers. The aim was to jointly develop quality standards and participate in standardisation work. In the meantime, the tasks have grown. The association ensures knowledge transfer in the field of technology and innovation and promotes dialogue between its members and guests on future topics. In doing so, the association is guided by the core values of fairness, innovative spirit and future orientation. An internal competition agreement, which is regularly reviewed and updated, provides the framework for cooperation.
